Why are we enhancing habitat and our approach to BNG in North Yorkshire
We have implemented BNG units in North Yorkshire to reduce Impact on our environment resulting from human activity is well documented and Habitat Exchange play a positive role in helping address our climate crisis via environmental enhancement project and consultancy work.
Environmental legislation, obligating business to operate to Net Zero Carbon standards and for developers to mitigate and enhance Biodiversity are two well recognised examples and Habitat Exchange offer solutions.
Habitat Exchange implement carefully managed enhancement projects generating environmental credits, such as Carbon Credits, Biodiversity Units, and other value in Nutrient Mitigation, and Newt Mitigation schemes.
Enhancement work is designed in liaison with with Ecologists, implemented, registered, measured and managed independantly and the credits or units are marketed to business and developers.
Our primary focus is delivery of habitat enhancement offering the quickest and most direct environmental benefit and our projects to date include woodland, meadow and wetland enhancement.
Where are our projects in North Yorkshire and why Habitat Exchange?
Habitat Exchange, currently operating in North Yorkshire, are an independant, local, family run, ethical business. Our unique approach takes responsibility for the whole process, from site ownership, through design and implementation, registration, management and maintenance obligations.
Many other providers of Biodiversity Units are brokers, intermediaries between land owners and developers, which can add layers of legal agreements and inefficiency to the process.
Habitat Exchange offer an efficient, ‘one stop shop’ solution for delivery of Biodiversity BNG units.
Our previous experience in habitat enhancement project work is complimented with over 20 year experience in dealing with planning applications.
Spatial risk is a factor in Biodiversity Net Gain legislation and location is significant. Where offsetting is necessary, it is desirable to enhance habitat local to development sites and this is managed on a district basis. Spatial risk is not associated with Carbon Credits.

Our back story and progression with BNG in North Yorkshire
Our experience in habitat enhancement project work started with implementation of a native woodland creation project planted in 2019. This modest scheme was instigated without any commercial aspiration, rather a simple desire to make a positive contribution to our natural environment as a family. We are pleased the woodland is becoming well established as evident in some photographs use in our media.
Habitat Exchange was established as a commercial enterprise in 2023 to meet our growing desire to instigate more enhancement projects and in direct response to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) planning obligations becoming effective in January 2024.
Habitat Exchange have a new site identified for habitat enhancement which is currently being designed for implementation work to commence in 2024.
All enquiries are welcome immediately although Biodiversity Units will be available as soon as the scheme is registered with Natural England whihch we expect in early summer 2024, and any Carbon Credits developed as part of the project will be made available via the Woodland Carbon Code concurrently.
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) & Offsetting in North Yorkshire
Choosing to delivery biodiversity units offsite can be beneficial for both developers and biodiversity enhancement.
Offsite locations can often be lower traffic environments with more efficient maintenance which can often be manged more robustly, all enabling biodiversity to thrive more readily.
Onsite biodiversity mitigation can present site constraints, reduce density of proposed development and leave a long term maintenance plan responsibility for the developer.
